This album stands as a chronicle of what this Christian hip-hop artist has accomplished over the past decade. As this well-chosen collection shows, a scrappy attitude and a wicked sense of humor have sustained Reuben over the course of five studio albums. What’s also made clear is how much his sound has expanded since his feisty, word-drunk debut album. Reuben has found fresh ways to express his positive spiritual values even as he’s blended pop/rock elements into his work. The best of the early tracks heard here — including “Do Not” and “Hindsight” — are faith-based rap anthems at once sly and Spirit-filled. Later efforts find Reuben whipping up frothy pop tunes like “Move” and “Nuisance,” as well as provocative social commentaries as “Make Money Money” and “Jamboree.” Through it all, Reuben has never flagged in his commitment to mixing fun with a higher purpose. Zappin does an excellent job in tracing the limits (thus far) in this righteous rapster’s art, whetting one’s appetite for his future projects.
