In recent decades, septuagenarian tenor saxophonist Houston Person has released a steady stream of romantically inclined bebop affairs filled with swinging blues-based songs. Featuring the esteemed backing of vibraphonist Steve Nelson, pianist Lafayette Harris, bassist Ray Drummond, and drummer Lewis Nash, this album is no different, and that’s not a bad thing. Person’s breathy but brawny tone works perfectly in this kind of music. Yet he also expands things with a soulful version of Otis Redding’s “Try a Little Tenderness” and saves his best playing for the closing blues ballad, “You Can’t Lose with the Blues.”
