Joni Mitchell describes this thematic compilation as “my contribution to Saskatchewan’s Centennial celebrations.” Mitchell spent most of her childhood in Saskatoon, and it’s reflected in many songs presented here, from her need to escape its harsh winters (“Urge for Going”) to memories of being a teenager dreaming of bigger things (“Let the Wind Carry Me”). Her music evokes the icy terrain on “Paprika Plains” (in a new mix) and the extended narrative of “Song for Sharon.” “River” and “Raised on Robbery” are the album’s best known songs. However, Mitchell’s genius follows her everywhere; the edited version of “Come in from the Cold” is simply wondrous.
