Jeff Bates’ seductive vocal style has reminded more than a few listeners of the late, great Conway Twitty. Me and Conway finds Bates embracing the comparison with covers of six Twitty signature tunes along with six originals. His renditions of songs like “I’d Love to Lay You Down,” “Don’t Take It Away,” and “After the Fire Is Gone” (featuring Loretta Lynn, who first recorded the song with Twitty in 1971) recapture the passion that made them hits the first time around. This album both honors a legendary artist and adds luster to Bates’ own career.
