P.T. Anderson's film adaptation of Inherent Vice captures author Thomas Pynchon's dizzying vision of '70s Los Angeles, and this soundtrack is a blissfully disorienting complement. In contrast to his scores for the Anderson films There Will Be Blood and The Master, Jonny Greenwood's instrumental pieces take cues from Hollywood noir and are full of sweeping string crescendos ("Shasta") and moments of suspense ("Adrian Prussia"). They're juxtaposed against the spastic avant-rock of Can's "Vitamin C" and Neil Young's hayseed roller "Journey Through the Past." Sequenced out of order, the soundtrack is as wily and frenetic as its film counterpart.
