Vashti Bunyan has said that 2014’s Heartleap—which comes nine years after Lookaftering, which itself had come 35 years after her 1970 debut—is her final album. That's a pity, since her musical vision is so singular and heartily embraced by a cult audience that have found her soothing textures and melodic ideas incomparable. A few other modern singer/songwriters have absorbed such subtlety, but on this self-produced album it’s clear how irreplaceable Bunyan is. “Across the Water,” “Mother,” “Jellyfish,” “Shell,” “The Boy,” and “Gunpowder” all revel in piano, strings, and layers of vocals that create timeless mysteries worth pursuing.
