Justin Broadrick and G.C. Green reunite as Godflesh for the first time on record since 2001’s Hymn. Though it's just four songs and 20 minutes long, Decline and Fall makes a grand statement. The duo’s epic, uncompromising approach makes all they do an overwhelming experience—and 20 minutes is, arguably, the best amount of time spent when introducing new ideas. It lets listeners fully digest the mammoth riffs without burning out. Broadrick discovered new textures with Jesu, and he brings the eight-string guitar he used with that project here. “Ringer” is an opening drone-like piece, built on a heavy rhythm, while “Dogbite” allows for a catchy chorus among the dirty riffs and dense rhythms. “Playing with Fire” provides even more contrast, with a touch of melody breaking up the industrial-strength grind. The title track provides complete apocalypse, the kind of uncompromising metal that fans adore.
