A Perfect Circle served as frontman Maynard James Keenan's extracurricular artistic outlet while his primary band, Tool, were stuck in legal limbo. "The Nurse Who Loved Me" and "3 Libras" demonstrate that Keenan can do almost heartbreakingly lush balladry when he chooses. "Weak and Powerless" is a slow-burner with some of his most hypnotic melodies, and with "Judith" and "The Outsider," Keenan and guitarist Billy Howerdel prove they can make alt-rock that's melodically complex and hard-hitting.
