Began his Hollywood career as a studio musician and conductor, wielding the baton on James Horner's Battle Beyond the Stars in 1980. Newman's first feature score was Tim Burton's 1984 featurette Frankenweenie, which Newman co-wrote with Michael Convertino. More studio projects followed, including The Brave Little Toaster (1987) .
